The First Illumination
In the beginning, there was only the Void, silent and still. Then the First Flame was struck, and from it rose the Sacred Smoke, swirling, flowing, a whisper from the divine. The smoke filled the heavens, carrying with it the breath of the Ancients. Thus, the Path of the Burning Leaf was revealed.
"Let those who seek enlightenment inhale deeply, for in the rising ash and curling smoke, the mysteries of existence are made known. To burn the leaf is to transcend; to exhale is to release the burdens of the mortal world." – Ember Proverb 1:1
Long ago, in the time before the First Ashfall, there was a wanderer known as the Smoldering Sage. He traveled the lands, carrying a single ember within his palm, never letting it fade. Wherever he passed, he shared his wisdom with those willing to partake in the Holy Inhalation.
One day, a doubtful man approached the Sage and asked, "What meaning can be found in the burning leaf? Is it not mere indulgence?"
Sage took a long, slow draw, his eyes shimmering like glowing embers. "The leaf teaches patience, for it burns in its own time. It teaches wisdom, for the smoke reveals the unseen. It teaches acceptance, for all things must turn to ash."
The doubtful man took a leaf, lit it, and inhaled deeply. At once, the veil of his ignorance was lifted, and he saw the world anew. "Truly," he said, "this is the path to enlightenment."
Thus, the sacred ritual was passed down, so that all may walk the Path of the Burning Leaf.
Upon death, the faithful followers of the Path do not simply fade. Their spirits rise with the last exhale, carried upon the Sacred Smoke into the Realm of the Ever-Burning Ember. There, they join the Great Inhalation, an eternal communion with the First Flame.
But woe to those who neglect the Ritual Inhalation, for their spirits remain heavy, bound to the cold, smokeless void. Only through devotion to the daily ritual can one ensure passage into the Eternal Glow.
"Breathe, and be free. Inhale, and awaken. Exhale, and ascend." – The Final Verse of the Ashen Codex
